Athlete Whereabouts
Top-level gymnasts in the FIG Registered Testing Pool must keep their whereabouts information up to date at all times to enable no-notice out-of-competition testing.
What Are Whereabouts?
Whereabouts are information provided by a limited number of top elite athletes about their location to the International Sport Federation (IF) or National Anti-Doping Organisation (NADO) that included them in their respective Registered Testing Pool (RTP) as part of their anti-doping responsibilities.
Why Are Whereabouts Important for Clean Sport?
Out-of-competition doping controls conducted without notice are one of the most powerful means of deterrence and detection of doping — and an important step in building athlete and public confidence in doping-free sport.
Detection
Enables surprise tests that are harder to evade than announced controls
Deterrence
Knowing a test can happen at any moment discourages doping
Confidence
Builds public and athlete trust in fair competition
Who Needs to Provide Whereabouts?
Gymnasts nominated by the FIG through the FIG RTP List (or their NF through the National RTP List) must provide up-to-date whereabouts to ensure they can be tested at any time and anywhere at no notice.
How to Provide Whereabouts
Since 1 January 2009, FIG made the use of ADAMS mandatory for all whereabouts submissions and TUE applications. Gymnasts may delegate the task to an agent — but must request an Athlete Agent account from FIG first by contacting antidoping@worldgymnastics.sport.
⚠️ Athletes Are Ultimately Responsible
Athletes cannot avoid responsibility by blaming their representative for inaccurate information or for not updating whereabouts if they were not at the location specified during the 60-minute time-slot.
Where Can Whereabouts Rules Be Found?
Whereabouts rules are part of the International Standard for Testing (IST) — mandatory for all Anti-Doping Organisations (IFs, NADOs, major Games organisers, etc.) that have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code.
Travel & Last-Minute Changes
Gymnasts travel frequently for competitions and training camps. It is essential to keep whereabouts up to date at all times — especially when travel plans change unexpectedly.
✈️ Before You Travel
- Update your location in ADAMS before departing
- Include hotel name, address, and room number
- Set the correct time zone for each stay
- Ensure your 60-minute slot applies to each day of travel
📱 Last-Minute Updates
- Update ADAMS as soon as plans change
- Use the ADAMS mobile app for quick updates on the go
- Submit last-minute 60-minute slot changes via SMS
- Contact your NF or FIG if you lose internet access abroad
Good to Know
Filing Failures (FFs)
FFs can result from Missed Tests and Whereabouts Failures (failure to provide sufficient or timely information). Three FFs over a 12-month period constitute a possible anti-doping rule violation — bringing a sanction of between one and two years ineligibility depending on the gymnast's degree of fault.
The 60-Minute Slot
Testing can be conducted at any time, in or outside the one-hour slot. However, missed tests only count from unsuccessful attempts within the one-hour slot. Gymnasts may submit last-minute modifications by SMS.
