Medical Programme Overview
The health and wellbeing of gymnasts is a core priority for World Gymnastics. The FIG Medical Commission works alongside national federations, medical professionals, and anti-doping authorities to ensure that every gymnast — from junior to elite — competes in a safe and medically supported environment.
Athlete Health and Safety
FIG is committed to placing athlete health at the centre of all competition and training decisions. Key principles include:
- Every gymnast has the right to receive appropriate medical care before, during, and after competition.
- National Federations must provide qualified medical personnel at all FIG-sanctioned events.
- Athletes should not be pressured to compete while injured or medically unfit.
- Medical confidentiality must be respected at all times in accordance with applicable law.
Injury Prevention
FIG promotes evidence-based injury prevention strategies across all disciplines, including pre-participation screening, progressive training loads, equipment safety, adequate nutrition and recovery, and mental health support.
Competition Medical Services
All FIG World Championships, World Cups, and sanctioned international events must provide a designated medical room, at least one qualified medical doctor, physiotherapy services, a clear emergency plan, and access to an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Concussion Guidance
Any gymnast suspected of having a concussion must be removed from training or competition immediately. The principle is: if in doubt, sit them out. Return to gymnastics follows a medically supervised, stepwise protocol.
Medical Commission
The FIG Medical Commission advises on medical regulations, athlete protection, anti-doping matters, and scientific input on training and injury prevention.
