Apparatus

World Gymnastics establishes and enforces the technical standards for all apparatus used in international gymnastics competition. Every piece of equipment must meet strict specifications for safety, performance, and consistency.

Apparatus Programme Overview

World Gymnastics (FIG) establishes and enforces the technical standards for all apparatus used in international gymnastics competition. Every piece of equipment at a World Championship, World Cup, or FIG-sanctioned event must meet strict specifications for safety, performance, and consistency.

Certification Process

Before apparatus can be used at any FIG-sanctioned event, it must hold a valid FIG certification. The process includes manufacturer application, technical review by the FIG Technical Committee, physical testing, approval and listing on the FIG Certified Apparatus List, and renewal at the start of each Olympic cycle.

Safety Requirements

  • All structural components must withstand forces generated during high-level gymnastics.
  • Landing surfaces must meet minimum shock-absorption and thickness standards.
  • No sharp edges, exposed bolts, or protruding parts are permitted.
  • Apparatus must be stable and securely anchored per manufacturer instructions.
  • Equipment must be inspected before each competition session by a qualified technical official.

Discipline-Specific Apparatus

FIG publishes apparatus specifications for all disciplines: Men's Artistic (MAG), Women's Artistic (WAG), Rhythmic Gymnastics (RG), Trampoline (TRA), Acrobatic Gymnastics (ACRO), Aerobic Gymnastics (AER), and Parkour (PKR).

Inspection and Approval

FIG appoints qualified apparatus inspectors to verify equipment at all major events. An official inspection certificate is signed before the first official training session. Athletes, coaches, and team leaders may raise apparatus concerns with the Technical Delegate.
