How intelligent technology can support fair judging, safer training, and a deeper understanding of movement.
AI in action
Gymnastics combines speed, rotation, body position, and precise technique. AI-assisted systems can help analyze this movement consistently while qualified people remain responsible for sporting decisions.
Where AI can help
AI does not replace athletes, coaches, or judges. It can provide additional information that helps trained professionals review movement and make informed decisions.
3D sensing and computer vision can translate body positions and movement into data that can be reviewed frame by frame.
Element-recognition tools can give judges another technical reference when reviewing difficult or fast-moving skills.
Detailed movement information can support teaching, technical feedback, and research into safer athlete development.
Real-world application
World Gymnastics and Fujitsu have collaborated on a Judging Support System since 2017. The system captures gymnasts’ movements with 3D sensors and analyzes them as numerical data to provide an additional reference for judges.
The technology has been used at competitions since 2019. Its purpose is to support accurate review—not to replace the expertise or responsibility of judges.
Collaboration, testing, and competition milestones for the system.
Official use at the World Championships, including multi-angle review on selected apparatus.
Element recognition supported D-score calculation for Vault at the Friendship and Solidarity Competition.
The system captures an athlete’s movement, builds a digital representation of body positions, and analyzes recognized elements. Judges can use that information alongside the views and procedures already available to them.
Skeleton-recognition technology estimates body-joint positions from captured movement. This allows complex skills to be represented as data for technical review and research.
